Teilhard de Chardin (1881-1955) was a French Jesuit who believed in the
reality of evolution, but argued that it was not incompatible with Christianity.
His arguments were rejected by the Catholic Church; he was not allowed
to publish them, and he was sent from Paris to China, taking part there
in the research which led to the discovery of "Peking Man". His version
of evolution, later published, is somewhat mystical, and, apart from being
rejected at that time by the church, was never taken seriously in orthodox
scientific circles.
