Pierre-Simon de Laplace (1749-1827) was a French astronomer and mathematician. Today he is most remembered for his development of Newtonian mechanics into the hardest physical determinism. But also for his important work on probability. Laplace considered, however, that the need to make statements about probability came from our lack of knowledge, rather than from the nature of reality.  There is more on Laplace in the area of these pages on chance: if you go there, use your browser's "back" button to come back here.
