Vice-Chancellor Professor Lap-Chee Tsui charts the way forward for HKU
July 2007

When I assumed the Vice-Chancellorship of HKU almost five years ago, I knew that I would not be able to make this University a world-class institution without the support of all of you, but I had no idea how exciting, challenging and meaningful this position would be. In my time at HKU I have had the honour of working with some truly remarkable individuals, and the overall support from the HKU community has allowed us to overcome some unprecedented challenges and accomplish many historic achievements together. It has certainly been a privilege for me to serve the University and its community, and I wish to thank all those who have lent me their support during my first term.

I believe that, during my first term, the University has been able to lay the foundations for a significant leap forward in its academic capacity, social influence and international reputation. Although undertaken in particularly difficult times, especially in terms of the economy and related funding cuts, we have been able to establish new governance and management structures and processes, which represent a historic change in the culture of the University, and form the basis of our second century of academic achievement. I now firmly believe that the University can move forward confidently to meet new and exciting challenges.

As many of you know, the University will be celebrating its 100th birthday in a few years. By that time, it will also be in the midst of great change – in terms of what the institution looks like, what it does and what it means to its different members. This is a timely opportunity to answer some questions I am often asked about the future of the University and to share with the HKU community some of my views on the developments I would like to see realised in the next five years.
