Project Title:Assessment of the fit of a factor analysis model to items
Investigator(s):Mr. Lam R.Y.H.
Department:Faculty of Education
Source(s) of Funding:Block Grant Earmarked for Research
Start Date:May 1990
Abstract:
To determine whether indices of fit of the factor analysis model will suggest a misleadingly poor fit even when the model fits the items well; to examine methods of overcoming the shortcomings of these indices.

Project Title:A cognitive approach to assessing performances in English
Investigator(s):Mr. Lam R.Y.H.
Department:Faculty of Education
Source(s) of Funding:Block Grant Earmarked for Research
Start Date:May 1991
Abstract:
All present asssessments of students' performances are based on what students can do correctly in relation to a set of test questions. This study examines an alternative approach of assessment in which students' performances are judged on the basis of how they process information in order to arrive at a correct or incorrect solution.

Project Title:An empirical investigation of the instructional sensitivity of the secondary school science curriculum in Hong Kong
Investigator(s):Mr. Lam R.Y.H.
Department:Faculty of Education
Source(s) of Funding:Block Grant Earmarked for Research
Start Date:May 1991
Abstract:
The study proposes to (a) examine methods of assessing instructional sensitivity and (b) apply these methods to survey data collected already on the science achievement of school students in Hong Kong. The aims of the analyses are to identify those areas of the science curriculum where students have not been able to show an improvement in understanding even when exposed to instruction and those areas which are less resistant to teaching.

Project Title:An item response theory (IRT) model for serially related test items
Investigator(s):Mr. Lam R.Y.H.
Department:Faculty of Education
Source(s) of Funding:Block Grant Earmarked for Research
Start Date:July 1992
Abstract:
IRT models provide a mathematical description of students' performances to test items. A restrictive assumption of the models is that an examinee's responses to test items are statistically independent. This assumption is not satisfied in tests such as those found in the A Levels and the O Levels examinations. A modified model is proposed and the purpose of this study is to examine the properties of the model using real and simulated test data.

Abstract:
To pilot a curriculum development and implementation project to integrate IT fully into the math and Science streams of the PCEd program so that teachers graduating from the program would be so used to employing IT in their own learning and professional activities that they cannot imagine life as a professional without IT. This is seen to be a fundamental requirement of teacher education programs if these were to have significant impact on the use of IT in schools. To explore the possibility of involving placement schools in a partnership on the use of IT in Science and Math education, where conditions permit.

Abstract:
To explore the formation of a knowledge building community, that is, to investigate developments in and relationship between enquiry and knowledge building abilities and the changing group dynamics and interaction patterns of the learners, and its possible relationship with different facilitation behavior; to examine whether project based learning taking place in different cultural settings may result in different patterns in the formation of knowledge building communities, in particular differences in group dynamics and interaction behavior in knowledge building activities; to examine the possible differences in the kinds of interactions that take place in the two different communication environments: the asynchronous Knowledge Forum and a synchronous MOO type environment in order to understand better the kinds of affordances these two types of environments provide to knowledge building activities and to community formation.

Project Title:Quantifying changes in velopharyngeal competence following pharyngoplasty: a comparison of methods
Investigator(s):Dr. Whitehill T.L., Dr. Samman N.
Department:Faculty of Education
Source(s) of Funding:Block Grant Earmarked for Research
Start Date:November 2000
Abstract:
Pharyngoplasty is a surgical procedure designed to improve velopharyngeal closure and speech in patients with velopharyngeal incompetence (VPI), a common consequence of cleft palate. It is important to document the efficacy of pharyngoplasty, in order to ensure best possible treatment for patients. We have developed a new method for quantifying changes in velopharyngeal structures following pharyngoplasty, which will be compared with a previously-described method, and compared with speech outcome measures.

Investigator(s):Ms Wong L.L.N., Dr. Hickson L., Dr. McPherson D.B.
Department:Speech and Hearing Sciences
Source(s) of Funding:Block Grant Earmarked for Research
Start Date:November 2000
Abstract:
Outcome-based measures are important in determining the effect and the effectiveness of a treatment; and to compare the effect of different treatment methods. Given a prevalence rate of 10% of the population with hearing impariment and the rising cost of hearing aids, it is pertinent that we measure outcomes of hearing aid fitting. There are very few such measures for Cantonese speakers, and those that have been developed are new and require validation. In this study, we aim to examine the reliability and validity of these new outcome measures.
