Faculty
of Architecture
| Introduction |
 |
|
The University
began to provide professional education in architecture in 1950.
In 1975 a building programme was introduced, which later developed
into the current surveying programme. The Faculty of Architecture
was established in 1984, replacing the former School of Architecture,
to provide professional education in both architecture and surveying.
The Faculty presently has two departments (Architecture and Real
Estate & Construction), which offer the following postgraduate
degree programmes:
Master of
Architecture;
Master of Landscape Architecture;
Master of Science in Conservation;
Master of Science in Construction Project Management;
Master of Science in Real Estate;
Master of Urban Design;
Postgraduate Diploma in Conservation;
Postgraduate Diploma in Urban Design;
Master of Science in Interdisciplinary Design and Management

| Department
of Architecture |
 |
|
The Department
of Architecture was established in 1950, and its full-time BArch
degree was recognized by the Royal Institute of British Architects
in 1961. The Department replaced this degree with a Master of Architecture
in 1993, and is now considered to be one of the leading architectural
schools in the world. It introduced dual degrees in MArch/MUD and
MArch/MLA in 2003.
The philosophy of the Department is to educate broadly cultured
graduates and to train them to be able to design sensitively using
minimum material and energy resources in an extremely dense urban
area at a time of environmental crisis. As the urban environment
in Hong Kong, Mainland China and other neighbouring parts of Asia
is in constant flux, it regularly reviews the role its graduates
should play. It emphasizes collaboration across various disciplines,
recognizing that architects need support from informed clients and
building professionals. It believes that design must be both disciplined
and devoted to serving society.
In recent years students of the Department have won an impressive
array of awards in international competitions. A particular focus
has been the International Student Design Competition. This was
incorporated into the Master of Architecture Programme in 1993,
with the goal of allowing M Arch students the opportunity to express
their creativity and hone their conceptual skills in a public forum
and to raise design standards through direct comparison with other
institutions in an international competition format. All competitions
have utilized sites and urban conditions in Hong Kong as a foundation
for experimentation. This not only encourages alternate voices but
also fulfills the students' emerging visions for a better future
for Hong Kong.

| Department
of Real Estate & Construction |
 |
|
The Department
of Real Estate and Construction was established in the 1980s when
it was realized that specialized inter-disciplinary academic and
professional inquiry and education is essential for the running
and development of the surveying, planning and development, real
estate and construction sectors of the economy.
The Department's staff have a strong academic and professional background
and considerable practical experience in economics, law, management
and construction technology. The Department plays an active role
in both academic research and consultancy work. Besides supervising
doctoral research in a wide range of areas, it offers B.Sc. (Surveying),
M.Sc. (Real Estate) and M.Sc.(Construction Project Management) degrees,
which have been professionally accredited by the Royal Institute
of Chartered Surveyors.

Course Aims:
The Master
of Architecture is a two-year full-time accredited professional
curriculum.
The core courses are:-
Architecture and urban design;
Professional practice;
Elective Courses:-
There are four categories within each of which there are a number
of courses available for selection by candidates in the Master's
programme. These courses may be taken in either the First or Second
Year
Architectural History and Theory;
Architectural Management;
Architectural Technology/CAAD;
Independent Studies.
In the first semester of Year 1 of the course, the students are
asked to select a 'Design Studio' from a range of independent studios,
which offers a respective design programme focusing on different
aspects of current topics in architecture and urban design. The
project sites are selected from cities in China, including Macau
and Hong Kong. The programme encourages students to develop analytical
skills to deal with complexities of urban design and to demonstrate
their competence in architectural design skills, from conceptual
explorations to construction detailing.
In the second semester, the students will take part in the independent
Design Studio programme and course options offered in the Department.
In a Design Studio, the student can choose either to undertake a
project in Hong Kong or another city in China (Beijing, Shanghai,
or Macau) or to participate in a range of international student
design competitions. On occasions they may work on research projects
with local and international organizations.
In Year 2 students work on individual Design Thesis projects supported
by research and field work, case studies to substantiate the proposed
design programme and justify their selection of the site. The Design
Thesis is a conclusion of the MArch degree curriculum, and is formulated
by individual students with their own architectural motivations.
With the assistance of a group of advisory teachers, the student
will chronicle the architectural or urban design issue involved.
Candidates on satisfactory completion of the MArch degree may apply
to continue their study towards the award of the MUD or MLA degree
under a dual degree programme. Those interested in registering for
the dual degree programmes should consult the Head of Department
well in advance for advice on their selection of courses in order
to take account of the requirements and provisions as set out in
the MUD and MLA degree regulations and syllabuses.
The professional degree of Master of Architecture is recognized
by the Hong Kong Institute of Architects (HKIA), Architects Registration
Board (ARB), The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), and
the Commonwealth Association of Architects (CAA).

Course Aims:
The Centre
of Urban Planning and Environmental Management offers a postgraduate
programme in urban planning leading to the degree of Master of Science
in Urban Planning. The degree is awarded through the Faculty of
Architecture.
The MSc(Urban Planning) is the only planning programme fully recognised
by the Hong Kong Institute of Planners (HKIP), and its graduates
can become full corporate members of the HKIP after two years of
relevant planning experience. Students who satisfy the MSc(Urban
Planning) curriculum requirements are exempted from the final examinations
of the UK's Royal Town Planning Institute.
The MSc(Urban Planning), like similar courses elsewhere, is professionally
oriented. The programme provides a comprehensive training in the
theory, methodology and practice of urban planning, which equips
students to enter employment in urban planning and other land development
related fields in both the public and private sectors. As urban
planning requires multi-disciplinary perspectives, students are
admitted with degrees from a variety of related disciplines, such
as architecture, civil engineering, environmental sciences, geography,
real estates, social sciences and surveying.
The programme comprises a central core element of compulsory lecture
courses, seminars and project work which focus on the relationships
between planning and the development of urban environments and the
role that urban planners play in urban development. Students are
also encouraged to develop thematic specialisations by selecting
optional courses drawn from various areas in transport, housing
and environment. Students are also required to produce a substantial
piece of individual work in the form of a dissertation.
