A Glance at Scientific Research (2008)
BackIn an ever-changing world, high quality, innovative research can enable societies to address challenges and realise opportunities.
From global to local issues, research at the University of Hong Kong (HKU) spans all major disciplines across its faculties and departments and research centres/institutes.
Alongside supporting a broad range of curiosity-driven research to encourage the emergence of novel ideas, cross-disciplinary research is given particular emphasis through the University's Strategic Research Areas. Collaboration, both within HKU and with leading institutions in the Chinese Mainland and around the world, is also key to the University's research activities.
A number of State Key Laboratories, key components of China's science and technology research system, are based at HKU. The University consistently secures a major share of competitive government funding for research, including projects under the Areas of Excellence scheme.
The work of HKU's researchers has attracted international recognition, including through international institutional rankings, the percentage of HKU scholars in the top 1% in their field according to the ISI's Essential Science Indicators, and external awards and honours.
This 2008 video provides an insight into some of the University's research directions and developments, particularly in scientific fields.
