China

Introduction

China’s re-emergence as a global power presents a fascinating study. The country’s rapid development has led to changes that often outpace government policy and can result in collisions between old and new ways of doing things. In this Strategic Research Area, HKU researchers consider how these changes affect business, governance and social welfare. For example, weak economic institutions in some areas of China may dampen foreign direct investment, particularly from the US, and researchers will determine if this is a case. The effectiveness of government policy in addressing urban policy will be examined, as will be the impact of a changing society on the development of creative industries. Our scholars are also interested in how mobility affects the sense of identity, as reflected in the writings of overseas Chinese who return to Hong Kong and the Mainland.
