Structural Biology.

X-ray crystallography is the major technique for elucidating structure-function relationships.  The results can provide insights into how biological systems work and may find wide reaching applications in pharmaceutical design. Our research focuses on the development and utilization of crystallographic methods to drive structural studies of biologically important proteins. One project is on cell signaling pathways involving CD38/CD31 that may offer insights into mechanisms in certain diseases, such as leukemia and diabetes. Another is on the interplay between CD38, HIV glycoprotein gp120 and HIV’s receptor CD4 and implications for the inhibition of HIV and CD4 interaction. We are also interested in studying surface glycoproteins of H5N1 viruses that are critical in viral infection, including hemagglutinin, neuraminidase and nucleoprotein.
