Welcome to the Department of Linguistics, The University of Hong Kong
THE DEPARTMENT OF LINGUISTICS, the
first of its kind in Hong Kong, was founded in 1997 as part of the Faculty
of Arts at the University of Hong Kong.
Our mission is to serve the University and the community by providing
quality education in linguistics and to contribute to scholarship by conducting
research and producing original publications at the highest level.
Our Department has staff with knowledge of
a variety of languages and interests and expertise
in different areas of linguistics and related disciplines.
At the undergraduate level, we offer 3 majors
within the B.A. curriculum: Linguistics,
Linguistics and Philosophy, and Human
Language Technology. We also contribute to the teaching of the B.
Cognitive Science programme and the BA&BEd
in Language Education (English) programme. At the postgraduate level,
we offer an M.A. in Linguistics and an
M.Phil. and Ph.D. programme. We also teach a Postgraduate
Diploma in English Studies in collaboration with the Centre for Applied
English Studies and the School of English.
The department also attaches much importance to
industrial collaboration and community
outreach.
