Department of Japanese Studies

Welcome to the Department of Japanese Studies at the University of Hong Kong. Our department offers an undergraduate programme which is practical, interesting, rigorous, rewarding and fun. You can learn the language of one of Hong Kong’s most important trading partners, as well as gain an in depth understanding of Japan’s history, culture and society.

The Major in Japanese Studies is an interdisciplinary programme. Students will be trained, first and foremost, to become fluent in the Japanese language. The language courses cater to a range of competencies and emphasise the development of sound reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. Students will also study courses on Japanese history, society, film, literature, politics, anthropology, and Sino-Japanese relations.

Japan remains a major economic and cultural influence on a global scale, and proficiency in both the language and culture of Japan is an asset with many applications. Students who complete the Japanese Studies major develop highly valued skills that will enhance their career options. Our graduates enjoy successful careers in various private and public sector jobs.

The Department of Japanese Studies maintains an excellent relationship with the Japanese business community in Hong Kong. Each year up to twenty students have the opportunity to gain invaluable experience at prestigious Japanese businesses located in Hong Kong and Shenzhen as part of the Summer Internship Programme. In addition, the University of Hong Kong has long established partnerships in student exchange with nineteen universities in Japan. Students can study in Japan for one academic year or one semester.

The Department of Japanese Studies, established in 1985, celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2015.
