Hong Kong Culture
and Society Programme
In light of increasing
globalisation, the need to review the many different roles
that Hong Kong has played becomes more compelling, not only
for the people of Hong Kong, but also for those in China,
in the region and the rest of the world. The University
of Hong Kong has initiated the Hong
Kong Culture and Society Programme (HKCSP) as
an effort to achieve this goal and to develop Hong Kong
studies into an Area of Excellence.
Mission
- To highlight Hong Kong's
unique historical experience in order to explore its distinctive
identity;
- To understand Hong Kong's
role as a global city by analysing the key factors affecting
its development such as entrepreneurship, civic order,
fluidity and multi-cultural practices;
- To meet the challenges
of new governance and social changes after the handover
by providing well-informed advice towards policy making
in the private and public sectors;
- To instil through teaching
the relevance of the study of culture and society for
an increasingly technology- and information-based society;
- To establish an Institute
which will be a world-class centre for the study of Hong
Kong Culture and Society that will play a role in basic
research, teaching and policy studies.
