Master of research in Medicine

General Area of research:
Cancer

Project title:
Advance MRI techniques in Brain Tumors

Supervisors:
Dr. Henry KF Mak (Diagnostic Radiology)
Dr. Gilberto Leung (Surgery)

Objective and Significance:
Advanced neuro-imaging techniques i.e. MR spectroscopy(MRS), MR perfusion and diffusion have a crucial role in diagnosis of brain tumors and often act as surrogate markers of tumor response to multimodality treatment. Newer imaging techniques such as diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and susceptibility weighted imaging (SWI) hold promise in further elucidation of the pathophysiology of brain tumors.

Research Plan and Methodology:
Brain tumors would be classified into 2 groups-

  1. Diffusely infiltrative (such as GBM, PCNSL, oligodendrogliomas, fibrillary astrocytomas etc.)
  2. Expanding (such as meningiomas, medulloblastomas, pilocytic astrocytomas, metastatic carcinomas etc.)

5 to 10 subjects will be recruited into each group.

A comprehensive MR imaging protocol would be performed, including structural images and functional assessment by MRS, MR perfusion and diffusion, SWI and DTI. There will be one pre-treatment and at least one post-treatment scans. Such functional parameters would be correlated with pathologic and clinical follow-up results.
