General Information
The Centre of Urban Planning and Environmental Management was originally established in 1980 to provide postgraduate programmes in the fields of urban planning and urban studies and to act as a focal point for urban research within the University of Hong Kong. Following a major review of its activities, the Centre was given its present name in 1991 to reflect more accurately the changing emphases in its academic programmes and research interests. The Centre now has over 200 graduate students registered on the programmes which it offers or contributes to and it has seven full-time teaching staff.
The Centre itself offers a professional programme in urban planning leading to the degree of M.Sc. (Urban Planning) which is the only recognized programme by the Hong Kong Institute of Planners (HKIP) and the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) in Hong Kong. It co-ordinates and makes a major teaching contribution to the inter-faculty M.Sc. (Environmental Management) programme and M.A. (Transport Policy and Planning) programme. It also collaborates with the School of Professional and Continuing Education and the Faculty of Social Sciences to offer a Master of Housing Management (M.H.M.) degree. The Centre also provides research training leading to the degrees of M.Phil. and Ph.D.
The Centre acts as a focus for inter-disciplinary urban and environmental research within the University and it has over 30 Fellows associated with its research activities. It also undertakes consultancy work for the public and private sectors in Hong Kong and for international agencies. In addition, it has very active academic exchange programmes, particularly with China, and it offers a forum for academics, practitioners and the community to explore urban and environmental issues.
