Election of Clerk of Convocation

In accordance with the Constitution and Rules of Convocation, nominations were invited in the graduate email on May 6, 2003 and the last issue of the Convocation Newsletter for the election of the Clerk of Convocation. By the published closing date of June 10, 2003, only the following nomination has been received:

Since there is only one nomination for the post, the above-mentioned candidate will be declared elected ipso facto at the coming Ordinary General Meeting on July 11, 2003 according to Convocation Rule 42. He shall hold the office with immediate effect thereon until the Ordinary General Meeting to be held in May 2006.

Election of Members to the Standing Committee


As the number of validly nominated candidates (10) exceeds the number of vacancies (7), voting is to be held at the coming Ordinary General Meeting (OGM) on July 11, 2003.

Eligibility for Voting
All candidates, voters and proxies must be members of Convocation. Members are requested to present their Hong Kong Identity Card for verification.

Convocation Membership (According to Clause 4 of the Convocation Constitution)
Convocation shall consist of the following members:

  • The Chancellor, the Vice-Chancellor, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, the Pro-Vice-Chancellors, the Treasurer, the Deans of the Faculties, the Dean of Student Affairs, and the Registrar;
  • the professors, readers, lecturers, tutors, and demonstrators of the University;
  • graduates of the University registered in accordance with the regulations made by the Council;
  • holders of any certificate or diploma as listed in University Statue III2(a) and (b) of the statutes of which the admission requirement should be a first degree.

Votes (According to Clauses 23 - 24 of the "Rules of Convocation ")
Votes may be given either personally or by proxy.

Proxy (According to Clauses 25 - 27 of the "Rules of Convocation ")

  • A proxy must be a member of Convocation.
  • The instrument appointing a proxy shall be in writing under the hand of the appointor and shall be deposited with the Chairman of Convocation not less than 48 hours before the time for holding the OGM.
  • Proxy form shall be obtained from the Convocation Secretariat, c/o Development & Alumni Affairs Office (Tel: 2859 2603).

Close of Ballot (According to Clause 44 of the "Rules of Convocation")
The Chairman shall fix the time for the close of ballot at the OGM.

Declaration of Election Result (According to Clauses 45 - 48 of the "Rules of Convocation")
The Returning Officers shall determine the result of the election and the Chairman shall declare such result to the meeting. Those candidates who receive the greater number of votes shall be the elected candidates. If two or more candidates each receive the same number of votes and only one of them can be elected, the Chairman shall have a casting vote.

Term of office
The term of office of the Convocation Standing Committee members shall be three years commencing on September 1, 2003 until August 31, 2006.

Brief Biography:
S Y Choi is a management accountant and consulting economist with over 28 years' professional experience across the private and public sectors. He started in shipping upon graduation from the University. Between 1981 and 1985, S Y was a senior economist of the Government Secretariat, and in 1985 he joined Coopers & Lybrand to spearhead its economic and financial consultancy practice. Between 1997 and 2000, S Y was Finance Director with the Hong Kong Housing Society. He started Asia Consulting in 2001.

S Y's professional affiliations include membership of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants, the Hong Kong Society of Accountants, the Chartered Institute of Transport, and the Hong Kong Association of Corporate Treasurers.

S Y has served on the Convocation Standing Committee since 2001. He was a former member of the Hong Kong Housing Society and a panel member of the Central Policy Unit of the Government. He currently serves on the Council of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants, the Professional Accountants in Business Committee and the Finance & Administration Committee of the Hong Kong Society of Accountants, and the Executive Committee of the Hong Kong University Graduates Association Education Foundation. Socially, S Y is a member of both the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club and the Hong Kong Jockey Club.

I had been a HKU student for 10 years since 1989. After my first graduation in 1993, two higher degrees were taken in the 90's that extended my student life in HKU to a decade. During that period, I actively involved in different students and alumni organizations (detailed below) and my networks with these organizations were strongly established. At the same time, a great sense of belonging to HKU was built. Therefore, I am now working for the E-Business Technology Institute in HKU as an e-Business Development Manager to contribute to the business development of my home university.

In order to make further contribution to HKU, I hope I can be elected as a member of the Convocation Standing Committee so that I could serve as a bridge and help to strengthen the connections between the University and our alumni.

Brief Biography:
Jimmy Lo Chi-ming founded Roctec Electronics in 1989 to produce pay TV systems and light emitting diode (LED) display products. In 1997, he founded the Lighthouse Technologies Ltd. that designs and produces large LED video screens. The company won the Consumer Product Design Award in Hong Kong in 1999 for its LED superscreen which dominates the markets in Australia, Hong Kong and Taiwan and has been used in large-scale events such as the Sydney Olympics 2000. As an alumnus, he has served as Mentor since the inception of the HKU Mentorship Programme.

Mr Ma is a member of the Institution of Electrical Engineers, UK and a Chartered Engineer. He is also a member of Hong Kong Institute of Marketing.

Mr Ma has over 20 years of work experience in USA public listed multi-national companies in driving business growth in Asia Pacific region, primarily in electronics and high-technology industries. He has held senior positions of the following companies: Group Manager/Instrument Business of Asia Pacific, Varian Associates Inc; General Manager of Asia, Kemet Electronics Corporation; Managing Director of North Asia, Liebert Corporation (a subsidiary of Emerson Electric Co). At present, Mr Victor Ma is the VP Product Marketing of a small new venture NExTperience Limited, a R&D oriented technical service and consultancy company on internet-based business solutions as well as content applications in wireless devices.

Brief Biography:
Man Cheuk-fei graduated with a BA degree from the Department of Chinese in 1987. During his four years' study at the University, he actively participated in different student bodies. In 1986, he was popularly elected to serve as the Vice-President (Internal Affair) of Hong Kong University Students' Union, which entailed a one-year academic deferment, and since then has actively served the University. From 1988 to 1991, he was Tutor of Old Halls.

From 1990 he started his journalistic career. He first joined Next Magazine as Reporter/Writer in political news. Later he became founding editor-in-chief of Teacher Plus to launch a new monthly magazine specifically for Hong Kong educators. In 1992 he joined Hong Kong Economic Journal to serve as Editor/Writer of the commentary page. He was promoted to Assistant Chief Editor in 2000.

Mr Man has continued to undertake further study during the last ten years. In 1999 he obtained his MPhil degree from the Department of Government & Public Administration, CUHK. In 2000, he was granted a Knight Fellowship from Stanford University, as well as a Nieman Fellowship from Harvard University.

When he returned in 2001, he resumed his position with Hong Kong Economic Journal and became Chief Editor of Hong Kong Economic Journal Monthly from 2002 onwards.

Brief Biography:
Vivien Wai-yee Pau graduated in 1977 with a BSocSc degree, major in Psychology. She went on to pursue a career in marketing and marketing research in major multinational companies like ACNielsen and Citibank. Before she set up her own training and executive coaching business in early 2002, Vivien was the Managing Director of ACNielsen in Hong Kong & China, and the CEO of Commercial Press (HK) Cyberbooks Ltd.

She is at present the President of the Hong Kong University Graduates Association (HKUGA), one of the largest alumni bodies of the University with members from different faculties and years of graduation. She is also a member of the School Management Board of the HKUGA Primary School, the first and only school founded and managed by alumni of the University.

Vivien also participates actively in Convocation, leading the Opinion Survey on UGC's Sutherland Report of Convocation Members in 2002. She is a member of the Organising Committee for the 25th Anniversary Reunion Dinner and Fundraising Committee for the Class of 1977.

She is often invited to speak at various functions of the University and is an active lecturer at HKU Cyber Institute and HKU SPACE. Vivien also obtained a MBA degree (part-time programme) from CUHK in 1984.

Dr So Shu-fai, a general science graduate of the University of Hong Kong in 1973, holds a Doctoral degree of Management Studies. He is an Executive Director of Shun Tak Holdings Limited and has a diversified involvement in economic development and cultural activities in China, Macau and Hong Kong. In 1996 he became an Honorary Director of the HKU Foundation for Education Development & Research. He is also a Director of Sociedade de Jogos de Macau, S.A. and member of Economic Council of Macau Special Administrative Region, member of Consultative Culture Council of Macau Special Administrative Region, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Sino-Latin Foundation in Macau, Professor of the Academy of Chinese Culture, Beijing and Visiting Professor of Hunan University, China. He is currently a Committee Member of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. He has actively promoted Chinese calligraphy and is presently the Chairman of both the Jiazi Society of Calligraphy (Hong Kong) and the Association of Chinese Culture & Art of Macau. His calligraphy was among the chosen works of art displayed in the Contemporary Hong Kong Art Biennial Exhibition (1987) and the First International Artists Exhibition in Beijing (1989). Two Exhibitions, in his own right, were held in the University Museum & Art Gallery (HKU) and the Museum of Macau in 1999 respectively. His works were selected for the issue of Macau stamps commemorating "Chinese Arts" in March 2000, as well as collected by various museums, notably the Art Museum of Princeton University and the Hunan Museum.

Brief Biography:
After graduating from the University of Hong Kong in 1976, Teresa obtained her second degree and qualified as a Chartered Accountant in Australia. She returned to Hong Kong in 1981. Teresa served as a partner of Ernst & Young from 1988 to 2001. She specialises in the area of international tax and trust practice.

Brief Biography:
Started as a manufacturing engineer in electronic factories for 3 years after graduation in 1973. Joined China Light & Power Company Limited in 1976 and worked for 17 years in various posts, including Power Engineer and China Business Executive. Established own company to invest and manage 9 power projects in China since 1993. Currently Managing Director of World Power Investment Ltd, and was appointed as a council member by the Chief Executive of HKSAR to serve in the Kwun Tong District Council in January 2000.

Actively involved in activities of Students' Union and Independent Club Association while studying at HKU. A founding member of the Hong Kong University Graduates Association, promoted a closer link with the University, Convocation and other alumni bodies. A member of the China Committee of Convocation and Vice-Chairman of the 25th Anniversary Organisation Committee of the 1973 Class. Elected as President of the Hong Kong University Graduates Association for the years 1997-1999. A founding member of the Hong Kong University Graduates Association Education Foundation Limited and is currently the Chairman of the Executive Committee and Chairman of HKUGA Primary School Management Committee.

Brief Biography:
Graduated in 1969 with a BA degree. Had held the position as class representative for 3 consecutive years (1966-1969) and was elected president of GGAS (Geography, Geology and Archaeology Society) in 1967.

Spent 2 years with the Hong Kong Government immediately after graduation. Left the civil service in 1971 and joined the UK based Oriental & Steamship Navigation Company in Hong Kong. Since the early eighties, had been involved in international container leasing and related transportation activities covering the whole Pacific region. For the immediate past 3 years have taken an active role in logistics development projects both in Hong Kong and PRC.

Actively participating in alumni affairs for the last two decades, first as committee member of HKU Alumni Association (HKUAA) in 1973 and was vice-president from 1987 to 1999. Have been serving as president of HKUAA since 1999 and as of late taken up the re-engineering process of the Association. Have also been serving the Council of HKU as president of HKUAA.

The service as Convocation Standing Committee Member dated back to the early nineties and still serving in such capacity. Not too long ago, was co-opted in the on-going Convocation Review Exercise.

Would strive to contribute to the well-being of Convocation if elected in the forthcoming election and what is more, will dedicate to materialize the goal of cultivating the "sense of belonging" among graduates.
