A Lifetime of Memories - Dr Rayson Huang Book Launch

It was while writing a chapter for Dispersal and Renewal: HKU During the War Years that the University's tenth Vice-Chancellor began considering the eventuality of writing his own memoirs.

On November 14, 2000, Dr Rayson Huang, and many of his admirers, attended the launch and reception of his recent publication, A Lifetime in Academia. That day had been specially chosen to coincide with the birthday of his late wife, Grace Wei Huang as a tribute to them both.

The University Museum and Art Gallery was an ideal choice for the reception, allowing University family members to come together in a venerable locale. Many alumni, friends, staff, students, Council members, and student leaders past and present, were among the well-wishers.

 
Among those, the thirteenth Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ian Davies, recollected that it was during Dr Huang's time that the Faculty of Dentistry was established, thus creating the opportunity for him to work at HKU. A Lifetime in Academia is an intimate account of many of Dr Huang's experiences such as his early days in Shantou, return to China during the Japanese occupation, and life at Oxford said the evening's host Pro-Chancellor Dr the Hon T L Yang. The work also covers the Guangdong province native's postgraduate studies in America and Vice-chancellorships of Singapore's Nanyang University and of HKU. The book can be considered a work-in-progress and closes with a look at Dr Huang's recent work in higher education after his official retirement.

Not one to miss a good opportunity, Dr Huang took time out to present awards to the first three recipients of the "Grace Wei Huang Memorial Prize" for their outstanding undergraduate and postgraduate academic achievements in business studies.
