HKU Science Alumni Association

The Hong Kong University Science Alumni Association (HKUSAA) was formed in 1989 when the Science Faculty celebrated its 50th Anniversary. The objectives of the association are to maintain fellowship among science graduates, provide support to the undergraduates and contribute to the society at large in the scientific, commercial and industrial fields. This year at the turn of the millennium, the HKUSAA is stepping into a new decade commemorating its 10th Anniversary. On Oct 29 2000 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center, a new Committee for 2000/2001 was elected comprising 10 science graduates from the 70s to 90s:

President - Carolina Leung
Vice President - Jack Leung
Secretary - Kenny Lau
Treasurer - Brian Choy
Member - Arnold Ko, Banda Lee, Catherine Lau,
Edward Wong, Janet Lee, Vincent Lam

At the start of the new decade, the HKUSAA was revamped - all science alumni automatically become members of the HKUSAA and no membership fee is required. In the coming year, the HKUSAA has planned a series of activi-ties for its members. Some of the highlights are listed below.

Getting Together

Chinese New Year Spring Outing - The Chinese New Year Spring Outing for science alumni will be held on Feb 18 2001 (Sunday) at the Tai Po Kau Interactive Nature Centre. The Centre is a brand new development nestled in Tai Po Kau Village, features splendid natural beauty with 23 acres of diversified habitats and abundant wildlife. Science alumni can bring along their families, relatives and friends, from toddlers to senior citizens, to meet and share a lovely day together. For further information, please contact Ms Claudia Law at 2967 2298; fax: 2967 0212; email: claw@kerryprops.com.

Happy Hour Gathering  - The happy hour gathering will be a causal and regular meeting for science alumni to meet, relax and chat. It will be held on every second Tuesday of the month at the STIX Bar Basement of Park Lane Hotel Causeway Bay. No prior registration is required and all science alumni can drop by any time between 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm. The coming gatherings will be held on Feb 13, Mar 13 and Apr 10.

Field Trip/Short Overnight Trip - This includes various kinds of outings in forms of special interest groups or family outings, such as white dolphin cruise, bird watching trip or short overnight trip to nearby countries.

Support to Science Undergraduates

One of the objectives of the HKUSAA is to provide support and guidance to the undergraduates of the Science Faculty. The Association plans to arrange a Career Talk specially designed for science undergraduates. Science alumni with success stories from various professions will share their career experience from a science graduate perspective. The career talk will be held on Feb 20-21, 2001 at Rayson Huang Theatre from 5:30pm to 8:30pm.

Ties with our Alma Mater

The HKUSAA serves as a bridge for science alumni to maintain contact with their alma mater, to contribute and participate in programmes organized by the University. For example, the HKU Mentorship Programme and the Sports and Fun Day organized by the DAAO.
To: All Science Graduates
After graduation most of us have lost contract with our classmates or U mates. It is our hope that through these activities, our alumni can reconnect more meaningfully with each other. In fact, you may find it interesting and rewarding by meeting graduates from different years and professions. If you are a science graduate and want to re-establish contact with your many fellow graduates, please fax us your corresponding details to 2858 4620 or email us at hkusaa@www.hku.hk or visit our website. www.hku.hk/hkusaa.
