by Suraiya Kamaruzzaman
Suraiya Kamaruzzaman is the Director of Flower
Aceh and the recipient of the 2001 Yap Thiam Hien award for
human rights. Flower Aceh was established in 1989 by Acehnese
women to address the consequences of the Indonesian army's
crackdown on the Aceh Freedom Movement. The organization has
a dual mission to build justice in social systems in Aceh
and Indonesia and to empower women in the social, political
and economic spheres. It works with partner organizations
to carry out advocacy and training projects as well as counseling
for women, particularly those who are survivors of human rights
violations. Flower Aceh also collects data about women and
violence in Aceh, focusing especially on rape.
In this Talk, Ms Kamaruzzaman discussed the
work of Flower Aceh, including the challenges it has faced,
its accomplishments and its current efforts to involve women
in the Aceh peace process.
