Hong Kong Stock Market History Project

August 1996 saw the inauguration of the Hong Kong Stock Market History Project within the Centre, commissioned by the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong, Ltd. Under the directorship of Professor Wong Siu-lun and Dr. Elizabeth Sinn, an energetic research team comprising Patrick Mok and Edmond Lau is now engaged in work to document the history of securities trading and stock exchanges within Hong Kong.

The history of securities trading in Hong Kong can be traced back to 1866, while the first stock exchange began its operation in 1891. The two exchanges that existed prior to WWII merged in 1947 to from the Hong Kong stock Exchange which monopolised the stock market between 1947 and 1969. The Far East Exchange was formed in late 1969 and two other stock exchanges were established in the early 1970s in the wake of the big market boom. The four exchanges were then unified in 1986 to form the present Stock Exchange of Hong Kong.

The major tasks of the research team are to undertake oral history interviews and to collect related documents and artefacts, including the archives of the exchanges and major listed companies, share certificates, photos, videos, etc. The history of the early days has to be recovered through newspapers, government records, and historical accounts and documents of early listed companies. In the initial twelve month period, a catalogue of archives and artefacts as well as a bibliography of the history of the Hong Kong stock market will be compiled. At the same time, thirty oral history interviews with major figures in the securities trading sphere will be conducted.

  • The research team published "A Select Bibliography of Hong Kong Stock Market History" in early 1998. The Bibliography lists the archives, historical documents, oral history transcripts and reference materials relevant to the study of the stock market of Hong Kong. Copy of the Bibliography is now available in the HK Collection, HKU and other local university libraries.
  • The team also assisted the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong to publish a brochure titled "A Glimpse of the Past". An out-line of the development of the stock market of Hong Kong from 1891 to 1986 is presented in the brochure. Free copy is available in the Centre of Asian Studies.
