Update on Issues of Centennial Campus Buildings

28 Sep 2012 - 19 Oct 2012

Message from Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Infrastructure)

Dear all,

I would like to update you on the latest development of the Centennial Campus Buildings.

The new semester has been underway for two weeks already and I am pleased to see a lot of smiles on the faces of students, colleagues and visitors. I would like to thank the 100+ student helpers who made tremendous efforts in helping all users to navigate this new campus in the first week of the semester.

Both levels of the University Street are now open and I hope you can enjoy this weatherproof pedestrian walkway between the Main Campus and the Centennial Campus. We are still working on some minor works including landscaping the University Street. The upper level will be linked to the future MTR station in 2014.

While we will be soliciting views on the design and provision of the classrooms in the Centennial Campus, the Learning Commons is already proving to be a popular place for students. We are planning to open the 2nd floor of the Learning Commons in the second week of October. In contrast to the 1st floor, the 2nd floor will have a more youthful appearance and be fitted with more contemporary furniture. I hope it will be equally popular.

There are still a number of teething problems with the new campus including water seepage after the Red Storm Warning a few days ago, long queues for the catering outlets, and the low temperature due to air conditioning of some offices and classrooms. We are taking action to deal with these issues immediately and are confident that they can be shortly resolved.

I shall keep reporting to you on a regular basis as we settle into the new facilities. Meanwhile may I wish all of you a Happy Mid-Autumn Festival.

Regards,

Professor J.G. Malpas
Pro-Vice-Chancellor & Vice-President
