Electricity Saving Measures
20 Aug 2012
During July and August, the University will implement the enhanced energy saving measures to reduce the impact on the environment, in particular to the greenhouse gas emissions.
The Sustainability Committee, a sub-committee of the Safety, Health and Environment Committee, proposes the following measures be adopted during July and August 2012:
- Thermostat settings for air conditioning will be set at a minimum of 24 oC; common areas where practicable will be set at 25.5+/-0.5 oC;
- Air conditioning will normally be provided between the hours of 8:00 - 19:00 during weekdays and, upon request, between 8:00 - 13:00 hours on Saturdays; while air-conditioning for specialized laboratories (certain laboratories with microscopes etc.) can be extended upon request (see below if request);
- Booking of central classrooms and lecture theatres during summer holiday will be allocated in common buildings for efficiency gains;
- Lighting to lifts, corridors and lavatories will be reduced to a level that meets anticipated needs while at the same time preserving a practicable and safe working environment;
- Lighting for display purposes and for certain buildings and facilities (e.g., Loke Yew Hall, Eliot/May Halls, Sports Centers) will be reduced; and
- Pre-cooling of rooms, particularly classrooms/conference rooms/seminar rooms should be carried out with care so that energy would not be wasted; the temperature setting should be re-adjusted to 24 oC as soon as the room is pre-cooled.
The Committee would like to seek all University members’ support on our efforts by switching-off all lighting, equipment and appliances when it is not in used. With your support and cooperation, the University can demonstrate once again our commitment to our community on environmental obligations and our best efforts to reduce the carbon footprint.
