An opportunity to study abroad is something that
every student in American Studies ought to consider in the later
stages of their undergraduate career. It is not only a rare chance
to immerse yourself in the American environment and thus get to know
the American culture from within, but a chance to develop your
language skills, visit the places you have learned about in our
classes, make friends overseas, and develop a network of academic
contacts that might serve you well in your future intellectual
efforts, perhaps directed at obtaining a graduate degree in American
Studies or related disciplines. In the past, some of our students
have taken a semester off to study in the United States and Canada,
and to a lesser extent case Australia, in each case returning home
with a heightened awareness of intellectual, cultural and linguistic
life that takes place outsides Hong Kong. American Studies strongly
supports the study abroad program, and naturally grants credit
transfers for the courses you take at the host university abroad. If
you are interested in studying abroad while pursuing a major or a
minor in American Studies at HKU, and if there is anything we can do
to help you make the right decision and prepare yourself for your
semester overseas, please do not hesitate to get in touch with the
Program Director, Peter Swirski.
